Free Holistic Health Seminars Newspaper Article
by Tom McGeehan
The Lance Alworth Family Fitness Centers are sponsoring a series of educational mini-seminars focusing on different
aspects of holistic health. Topics will include chiropractic, iridology, acupuncture, massage, bio-feedback, nutrition, and others of interest to the holistic community. This unique lecture series is free and open to the
public (see accompanying schedule).
These seminars are being produced by Ralph Zuranski, who is in charge of rehabilitation,
nutritional counseling, physical conditioning, holistic health, and investigative research at the Point Loma Center. He also works with the head trainer of the San Diego Chargers.
HLN recently interviewed Zuranski to find out more about the Lance Alworth Family Fitness Centers.
HLN: Ralph, before talking about the center, we'd like to find out more
about your background.
RZ: I studied science, economics, and sociology at UCSD, where I got my degree in 1971. I have done extensive research on right-left brain
integration and equal use of both sides of the body. My ultimate goal is to achieve 100% use of both sides of my body and brain.
HLN: We understand you're initiating an
investigation of holistic health practices as part of your responsibilities at the Fitness Center.
RZ: That's right. Our upper level management is committed to doing all they
can to help our members make informed decisions regarding their personal health programs. I have been designated as a "human guinea pig" to sort out the facts from quacks. I hope I live through it!
HLN: Could you tell us a little about the Lance Alworth Family Fitness Centers?
RZ: I was hoping you'd ask that question, because we're very proud of our
facilities here. We have a large selection of modern equipment utilizing the latest exercise technology. Our Nautilus and Dyna-Cam machines have a unique cam design which varies the resistance through the
entire range of motion, which enables users to exercise their muscles more efficiently with less strain. We also have Hydra-Gym equipment which is very effective for strengthening, vitalizing, and balancing the
muscle groups. These machines work on a double-positive resistance principle; force must be applied in both directions. Strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and vitality are accomplished without an increase in muscle
size and without discomfort.
HLN: Are there other activities at the Family Fitness Centers?
RZ: Aerobic and
trimnastic dance classes are available at our different centers throughout the day, and we highly recommend them to both men and women. We also have different facilities and equipment available at our different centers, including
saunas, whirlpools, lap pools and handball and racquetball courts.
HLN: What can someone who joins a Lance Alworth Center hope to gain from their investment of
time and money?
RZ: Our members can see their strength, endurance, neuromuscular skill, and athletic performance improve. The functioning of their internal organs will be
vitalized, thus regulating digestion and elimination. The program also helps to protect the body from diseases of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Personalized nutritional counseling is available to all our members.
HLN: Do some of your new members have a difficult time making a transition from physical inactivity to sustained physical exertion?
RZ: When you become a part of our
family of members, a qualified instructor helps, you establish your own personal goals, taking you through an exercise program designed to tone and condition the whole body with your particular problems in mind. You will be
encouraged to start off slowly so your body can adjust, and after you have learned to use the machines properly, you will work individually at your own pace. A complete program review is initiated every four to six weeks to
guarantee consistent progress.
HLN: How long does it usually take to become physically fit, using the center's facilities?
RZ:
To gain excellent physical fitness through our conditioning program will take anywhere from three months to a full year, depending on age and body weight. Once the desired level of fitness is attained, it must be maintained by
working out at least once a week.
HLN: Are there non-physical benefits to the program?
RZ: Our members report their personal
relationships and work productivity improve and they become more self-confident and personally effective. As the body and mind integrate, the spirit becomes more vital. Members find themselves dealing with life from a position of
personal power rather than weakness.
HLN: Getting back to the seminars, could you tell us a little about the practitioners involved?
RZ:
I have assembled respected professionals from the major fields of holistic health, and our mini-seminars will be extremely interesting as well as enlightening. I want to personally invite your readers to take advantage of our
guest privileges when attending the seminars at our Point Loma facility and experience an energizing workout on our advanced equipment.
HLN: If our readers have any questions, how
can they contact you?
RZ: I am personally available to answer questions Mon-Fri from 7 AM – 10 AM at the Point Loma Center. We are located at 3545 Midway
Dr. in San Diego. |
